MOBILIZATION MESSAGE - INVEST ACT - Two-Person Crew and Border Crossing Safety
Aug 09, 2021

Call Your Senators Today!

August 9 — BLET National President Dennis R. Pierce is urging BLET
members to contact their United States Senators and ask them to include the Two-Person Crew and Border Crossing Safety language in INVEST Act H.R. 3684.

This bill was passed in the US House of Representatives in July and included 547 Billion over 5 years for Surface Transportation in the US. This bill was a big success for Amtrak funding, PTC Oversight, Long Train Studies and, most importantly, the issues of a freight train crew size standards and border crossing safety were included in the House version.

Sixteen Republicans have voted to advance the present Senate version of the bill, signaling a filibuster will not be an issue for the law to pass the Senate. The bill will then be conferenced by the House and Senate to decide on the final language that will go to President Biden for signature. The current Senate version does not include either the Two-Person Crew or the Border Crossing Safety provisions.

Contact your Senator now to tell them that a Two-Person Crew in the locomotive cab is the most important way to ensure rail safety. This crew would consist of one certified conductor and one certified locomotive engineer. Tell them to include Section 9506 of the House version of H.R. 3684 freight train crew safety standards back in the bill by amendment to the Senate version or to reconcile it in after the bill passes the Senate. The same is true of the Border Crossing Safety provisions contained in Section 9507 of the House-passed version of H.R. 3684.

If you are unsure who your Senators are, a complete list can be found at:
The time is now for you to defend the rights and protections that you have enjoyed throughout your entire careers!
