BLET Benefits of Belonging
Feb 02, 2024

The BLET is constantly searching for ways to add value to our membership, through initiatives like our Benefits of Belonging Program.

There are two features of this program. The first is through various insurance plans to cover you if you are injured and encounter a loss of earning potential. The second which is an income protection plan that covers you if you lose your job due to disciplinary situations. These are optional plans you can choose to participate in. I will highlight the plans below, along with a few other things. I encourage you to contact any of these groups for further information.

In addition, here is a link to The BLE-T National Benefits of Belonging website, with even more information about Retirement, Union Plus memberships, and much more. https://ble-t.org/benefits/

Railroad Retirement Board:

Your first resource for any situation you may face, would be the Railroad retirement board. They offer sickness benefits or unemployment benefits for members who unfortunately find themselves unable to work. This is in addition to being your resource for any retirement related needs.

Members can find more information online at https://rrb.gov/Benefits

Can you support your life on your basic railroad benefits? PROBABLY NOT!

Below, you’ll find information on the many different plans that Railroad Marketing has to offer. Feel free to contact them if you have any questions.

  • Short Term Disability - At Railroad Marketing, we know that your health is important to you. But if you can’t go to work because of injury or sickness…

  • Cancer Policy - According to the American Cancer Society- 2008, US men have slightly less than a 1 in 2 lifetime risk of developing cancer.

  • Critical Condition - We’ve all heard stories of people who are diagnosed with a critical illness and the treatment, loss of work, etc. ends up costing them.

  • Group Term Life Insurance - With the support of your union, Mutual of Omaha voluntary term life insurance is being offered to railroad workers at affordable prices.

  • Accident Policy - Most people have heard of these plans offered through AFLAC. Our plans offer similar benefits.

Union One (formerly Cornerstone Assurance Group):

We are pleased to inform you that you have the opportunity for optional enrollment in our BLET Group Short Term Disability, Long Term Disability and Life Insurance plan underwritten by Prudential.

Members can enroll in these important benefits to protect their income from loss due to injury, illness, or death.

Members have the following options:

  • Short-Term Disability (24/7 coverage): All members have multiple options for short-term income protection. Benefits can be stacked with other benefits such as RRB sickness benefits. Benefits are paid to the members tax free.

  • Long-Term Disability (24/7 coverage): Benefits start paying after one year or when short-term disability ends. Members have multiple choices that will allow them to protect their income for either 2 years or 5 years. These benefits can help fill the gap between when a member files for occupational disability and when RRB approves and starts paying long-term benefits to the member. Benefits paid to the member are tax free.

  • Life Insurance (24/7 coverage): This voluntary Life Insurance coverage includes an equal amount of Accidental Death and Dismemberment Coverage. It is guaranteed approval – no medical questions.

  • Critical Illness (CI) and Accident Insurance (ACC) Plan have been an important addition to the program.

We always encourage members to contact the Union One Office at 224-770-5307 to learn more and enroll. Their dedicated benefit specialists are ready and available to assist members and ensure they make the best decision for themselves and their families. Members can also enroll online at https://unionone.com.

For more than a century, the Brotherhood’s Relief and Compensation Fund (BR&CF) has provided job income protection for railroaders. The BR&CF is a not-for-profit organization actively managed by railroaders.

The primary benefit of BR&CF membership is income protection for members when “Held Out of Service” due to suspension or discharge for an eligible occurrence.

They also provide an Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Benefit coverage for incidents that occur while on duty.

Railroad National Health & Welfare Plan:

A new comprehensive resource guide outlining benefits under the Railroad National Health & Welfare Plan (GA-23000) is now available.

The brochure is a one-stop guide that provides contact information for all the various providers involved with the National Health & Welfare Plan (for example, medical benefits, prescription drug benefits, dental benefits, vision benefits, life insurance and accidental death & dismemberment benefits, Health Flexible Spending Account benefits, etc…). It is the most recent culmination of all such benefit providers being outlined in a single document.

All BLET members covered under the National Health & Welfare Plan should download the PDF and keep a copy for their records. It can be found on the Your Track To Health website https://www.ytth.com. It is also attached for your convenience.

If you have any questions about this information, or need additional assistance, contact Neil Burri BLET Div 622 Secretary Treasurer (308) 760-0937 or nburri@blet622.com.
